old excuse: super busy, no time to blog. This summer, I've managed to stay away from the computer so far, building practical sets at hornet with my pal cannie and the old skool sluzka crew, and at pandapanther with my friends junko, janet, julia, kazu, shinya, sara, and akiko.
i finally have a little free time to get back to sid the killer, and maybe... enjoy the summer?

the MIT museum in boston is awesome! all kinds of neat robots and stuff, including a lot of sculptures by arthur ganson, creator of "Toobers and Zots!" at one part of the museum, there was a wall with pictures posted in answer to the question: "hey kids, what kind of robot would you like to see MIT build next?"

hi friends,
first off, here are some great forest backgrounds from disney's paul bunyan short. i wish i had known about these sooner.

i think that hilda looks too young, so i will change her outfit to a sporty jumpsuit/windbreaker i remember that grandma had. i also remember hilda throwing sidney a banana from inside the boat and sidney missing it. then we watched the banana float away into the sun.

This weekend I painted Dominique Wilkins at Luv's Barber shop. Luv says that Dominique was his idol growing up and that not enough young cats today know who he is. He also thinks that his brother Gerald was nice. I have never really painted a mural before so I took a cue from a talent named Matt Luckhurst.

My boy George came by on day 1 and helped me fill it out. He was trying to keep his mouth shut when some guys were talking trash about D McNabb.

Last night, marie and i attended a rather fascinating lecture given by Matthew Ritchie at NYU's IFA. Ritchie talked a lot about how artists should use all of the available information that there is instead of reverting back to and referencing or paying homage to what has already been done (ya know, heaven hell, "the implosion of the art world"). He uses the concept of information as a source of inspiration, believes that information itself can become form, and break the space time continuum by traveling back in time. I didn't know that space time was shaped like a cone.
I respect him tremendously, I find his work fasciniting although unemotional. my only rub with the guy is that all of his lofty ideas about string theory and the shapes of the universe in isometric view are not at all evident for most normal people, and I suspect not even for quantum theorists. Regardless, I am not sure if we need to know where artists draw their inspiration from to appreciate it through our own lens, but Ritchie is certainly a good and funny talker so it might help to look at some of his interviews n' stuff.

matte paintings

lately, i've been working on matte painting for our film's backgrounds. they have ended up being a mixture of miniature sets, photographic reference, and photoshop painting.

although i am pretty happy with the way these look and ultimately think they are more beleiveable, i still remain nostalgic for the original photograph. even though things are slightly out of perspective, the original has a certain charm that the painted one doesn't. oh well.

this man is named chuck, a regular at spring studio. he has very strange proportions and even though he takes about a minute to get into the poses, they are well worth it.

after that i got my wisdom teef removed. back to being naive, hooray!

in other news, my film aethiopicus will be screening in front of the live nyu orchestra in march with newly composed music. hooray!

hi everyone, it has been a long time, i know and i'm sorry. since i have last posted, andrew and i have had a couple shoots in the green screen room and we are moving on to some animation. finally. here is shot one:

in order to complete this spaceship, i had to take apart a few more electronic appliances including a scanner/ printer, a typewriter that mysteriously would not stop working, and a few small toys.
the outer shell of the ship was plastic air painted with metallic and acryllic paint.
this is the back rotary that probably won't be shown in the film, but it can rotate!
this is the ninja turtles hover hq playset. national wholesale liquidators was going out of business this week so i decided to get myself a little 8 dollar christmas present. unfortunately they didn't have the hypershell which, when combined with the hover hq makes the HOVER SHELL.
i rememember that the ninja turtles were so popular in my preschool that we had to have designated day when everyone brought in their turtleparaphernilia and played with it. an action show about one of the slowest animals, pure brilliance. in any case, maybe i'll be able to scrap some parts for my next space ship.
also, the mayor of blake city and JD Amato finally settled their copyright dispute in the annual egg drop. my initial designs for a rubber band ball egg didn't work so well, but sometimes you just have to try and make things bounce. am i right? a good time had by all (except for michael porcello who almost got 'shanked by a homeless man that our parachute landed on).

miniseries: SPACE SHIP TIME

hi readers! (umm, hi mom and dad) today i am assembling parts to build a space ship. This task seemed daunting at first. Do you have to go to a fancy geeky model store and purchase some babylon star wars crap? Nope.
First off, major shout out to NASA for putting their entire image library online and copyright free. You can even download OBJ files of some of their spacecrafts. So there is plenty of scientific reference to use.
Now, Any NASA scientist will tell you that there are really only two parts to any space craft: the smooth outer metal shell, and the wiry, coggy electrical inside part.

I went to home depot to find some shiny outer shell parts.

Now for the innards. We happened to have a VCR player that doesn't work in our house, (but yet we still leave it near the TV) so i got a screwdriver and starting taking things apart.

At times this can be frustrating, but try and resist the urge take a hammer and smash things open because you will most likely break something that could have been interesting looking. It had to be put together by an assembly machine, so chances are there is a relatively logical way to take it apart.
And the deeper you go the more treasure you find. Here are the cogs:

Now enjoy the fruits of your labor! Taking apart things is fun, especially when you don't need them to work. I also opened up a remote control because the plastic shell might make some great wings. But I'll save that for next time.

miniseries: cliffs and rocks

to make rocks: carve the desired shape out of foam, then cover with black acrylic paint (above). Next buy some spackling paste, and spread a thin layer over all or part of the rock (below). finally, cover in a light coat of black paint again and sort of wipe it off as you go with a paper towel. tada!... a rock.

these silly things are the base coat for a close up of a rock. it is a hard piece of foam, with sandpaper slashes and painted with acrylic paint. soon to be covered with some sand and stuff.

miniseries: hills close and far

these cliffs were carved using a peice of wire with handles at the end, it's usually used for cutting up blocks of clay but if you sort of sift through with different rythms you can strike some really nice organic patterns.

i am slightly dissapointed in this model as the end shape is too symmetrical. this is because of an indecision to commit to improvisation or to stick to the plan. during the process, i will often discover something by accident and want to completely change directions. this is usually not smart. It is better to note the discovery and save it for later.

this is the base coat for a hill. after the acrylic i will put on cinnamon and flower to tone it down, and then spray paint. i am trying to get at more organic patterns, find asymmetry while keeping order. i am getting further away from a constructionist approach and closer to a more rythmic sort of work flow. try to mimic the natural forces that would act on form: the wind, the water, tectonic plates and all that jazz.

mini series 4: modeling and painting and ...TOX BOX

so much has happened since we've last spoken. i'll fill you in.
i ended up using the insulator foam spray to fill the holes in the foam, but i got a little carried away and sort of iced the whole thing like a wedding cake.
this stuff really expands and takes a while to set, at least a couple hours, so during this time i started submodeling, carving in details into the crater. At this point i'm not looking to drastically change the shape of the set, so i used the smaller tools available. the clay modeling tools and the pointy device worked well. After the spray dried, I spent some time picking apart the insulation foam because it got too bubbly, as you can see in this picture. I think there are better applications for this material.

I was getting pretty worried reading the warnings on the spray bottles, and I realized that I needed some serious ventilation. This sunday, my good friend George/Ben Conkin, and my new friend Alex Deschamps came over and helped me tear my room apart. Behold,... THE TOX BOX!

surrounded by trash bags and a plexiglass viewing plate, this is the perfect little fort for adhesive spraying and painting. the worker sits in the gap between the table and works while tourists can watch from the otherside of the glass. it's quite roomy, is it not?

I let alex handle most of the painting this time around while george and i worked on beginning another set. Here are some pictures in the process

for this set, i collected some sand from around the neighborhood to use that has a sort of brown coller and a fine grain. This was applied using the adhesive spray and alex did a good job building it up around where the white foam was to make it blend together. after this, spray paint of various colors were heavily applied. for the base color, spray directly straight on, but to get highlights on the edges, spray from the side.

this is the finished product. Although mistakes were made, I'm fairly happy with it. One thing we learned is that before applying sand grain, or whatever you are using, first put down a layer of acrylic paint directly onto the foam for a stronger color, then do your texture work on top of this. the inside of the crater has acrylic as the bottom layer and i think it somehow looks more convincing.

ultimately, i think we overworked it with the paint and ended up losing some of the nice detail that i carved. live and learn. in terms of our story, it is ok for this set to stand out as a bit different from the rest of our landscape, so i'm glad we did this one first.

did i mention that it has two parts?? just in case we want to get some panning shots on the inside and for easier transport. this concludes the basic process for building a crater. Big thanks again to alex and george. I will be posting much more about how to make cliffs, valleys and canyons, and hopefully a wrecked space ship.
it's almost like a trip to the zoo!

mini series 3: building it up and carving it down

The first set i am building will be a giant crater where the bug lives. it is about 2 by 2 by 1 ft. This is a particularly complicated base because it has to be able to split in two so we can film the inside of the crater from the side.
Sorry i didn't take more pictures of the base building process, but i will try and fill you in. basically i took a square wood, and added some pegs for them to fit together. I then started glueing the foam blocks on, using the contact cement and a GAS MASK. I kept in mind that the set had to come apart but i also put a few blocks over lapping so that the set will stay together during the construction process. later on a will cut it apart. We will see if this was a good idea or not.
I cut some of these blocks with a saw just to get a very preliminary idea of the over all shape of the crater. The more of this you can do, the more economical you will be with your foam, however, make sure that the peices are really glued down solidly, and try not to have too many breaks because you will have to fill in these cracks later.

I let this sit over night with some books on top of it for pressure and to give it time to fully air out. the next morning i started so carve it out broadly, mainly with the rasp, and the stilleto knife. i am not looking for detail, i am still trying to refine the overshape.

more refinement. this process is surprisingly quick, and the blick foam will carve very easily so if anything, be carefull not to carve too much. you'll notice that the construction has a few little niches where the foam was put together. unless you want to waste a bunch of foam, this is unavoidable. perhaps i will be able to use the insulator spray or glue a little scrap foam on to patch it up.

now that its starting to look like a crater, take a couple photographs from the perspective shots that you will need in your film. if it is not reading, maybe you will want to exaggerate the shape a little. start thinking about foreground and background

mini series 2; supplies and facilities

...well, not quite yet. First and foremost, you need a good place to build all of this stuff. That means ventilation, and a place that is not going to interfere with other people. In my case, that happens to be my hall and my bedroom, haha.
Realize that the foam is going to get EVERYWHERE so have some sort of system of disposing of your carvings. in my case, i have one of those tables that expands from the middle, so i lined the gap with trash bags that connect to a bin under the table. that way i can brush all the extra stuff into the gap and it disappears!

SUPPLIES: I got all of this stuff can be bought at home depot.

base:
Your sets will need a firm base. I used a big peice of plywood maybe a half inch thick.

Foam: I bought some fancy blick carve foam, which makes it very easy to carve and has a sandy look, but insulation foam is just as good, much cheaper, and sold at HD.

Also, I found this blue foam in a dumpster. It is much more firm and will make good rock cliffs.

Gas masks: i have two, one light weight one for carving so that i do not inhale actual foam particles, and one more expensive one with carbon filters for when i am using chemicals. also have glasses and latex gloves.

ADHESIVES:
-contact cement or pva wood glue. this is used to glue the foam to the base and foam to foam. I used contact cement, which is the white tin can. this stuff is really toxic so make sure you do this in a ventilated room and give it time to dry.
- spray adhesive: usefull for adding sand and texture. i used the number 77, the second highest strength. next time i will get 90.

spray paint: get a couple colors, they are cheap and fun.

insulator spray: this "great stuff" is really great stuff. you spray it out of the can like cheese whizz and it hardens. you can spray paint it while it's still wet for a sort of sulfur type of look. i have yet to use it to its full potential but hopefully we will be talking more about it. thanks to alex for the tip.

TOOLS: a normal saw, hammer and screwdriver etc will come in handy. the stilletto thing i think is a plaster knife, and the cheese grater thing is a rasp. sandpaper is usefull too. other than that, most of these tools can be found in the ceramic area at pearl paint. that everything is covered with foam, this stuff really is messy.

mini series 1: reference and conceptualization.

Before we begin this exciting magical journey, it is good to know what you want your sets to look like. Actually visiting such places first hand is the most beneficial, but photographs and concept art can work just fine. What is the mood you are trying to set? What is the scale of the landscape? A trick to making great foreign environments is taking elements from our planet and altering them to suit your new landscape. The best concept artists are able to strike that great balance between familiarity and alien-ness. This link below has some of the strangest looking things on the planet.

Simultaneously, it is good to think about what kinds of organisms are going to inhabit the landscape. How are they going to travel across the terrain? What elements will they utilize to live in, hunt for food? In our case, we have a giant bug that lives in a crater, stalks his prey by emanating a poisonous toxin that draws them towards his nest. okay, i could go on and on about visual reference and building your visual library, but at some point we have to begin. So the next thing to do is carefully storyboard your film so that you exactly what shots you will need. This will save you time. Instead of building one massive set with everything inside it, you can build multiple smaller sets that are custom built to fit your shots. for instance, if you have a closeup of a guys helmet on the ground, you would want a seperate set with a larger grain so that it looks very close.
Next it is always good to draw your landscape a bunch of times to see what kind of basic shapes you are looking for, and to work out composition and color. Check out the work of the evertalented Sparth.
it is great to look at professional's work to see what they envision, but at some point you should draw it yourself to get specific to your own needs and to have your vision. You may be a fantastic carver and a poor drafter, yet i still believe that the cognitive process of drawing will inform your carving.

One thing I have learned from this project is this: Only strive for symmetry on the macroscopic level. In pursuit of perfection, you will enrage yourself and surely fail. It is much easier to accept that a piece of wood is not straight, and find a mate that comfortably fits its curves.

drawing is fun and relaxing and nice. for a certain amount of time you cannot go anywhere else. it is like a wormhole in your day and the scheduling pressures are at least momentarily relieved. this allows you to release your anxieties and subconscious feelings without feeling selfconscious that someone is looking over your shoulder. growing up i remember that i did most of my heavy thinking and math homework on the toilet. i also remember one time when my mother tried to train our cat to use the toilet. needless to say that didn't work.

when i was visiting my grandpa in connecticut, i found this cool book about australia. australia is really strange looking and has lots of alien like deserts. I wouldn't be surprised if zacharia sitkin has some crazy theories about the aboriginal peoples.

the other night I watched this really fucking crazy film called The Cell (2000). I don't remember it getting much attention, perhaps because it is really disturbing and the plot and casting is sort of wonky. Regardless, the art direction on this film is absolutely stunning, and has left visceral memories in my head. One artist IMDB sited as visual influence is a very talented painter named Odd Nerdrum.
Growing up in the height of modernism and pop art, Odd's pursuing of old master techniques made him somewhat of an outcast. Some of his influences are Rembrandt and Goya.
I also posted this horn player guy by Zdzislaw Beksinski because he has a similar mood and fantastic rendering skills .

today i went to the metropolitan museum. if you haven't seen the new superhero exhibit, you should definately check it out. unfortunately i wasn't aloud to take pictures and i didn't feel like drawing them because it was really crowded with 12 year old boys, but the show also appeals to sartorialists with edgy superhero inspired fashion.
the met is a great place to draw because the statues don't move or complain, ortake breaks and eat doritos like stupid models do.

Hey everybody on the internet. I don't know why I am now suddenly deciding to publish my musings on a blog, but I guess it is a good excuse to write and track my progress. Or maybe I've just been inside too much today.
I chose the name Anthropic Pastoral for a few reasons. As my friends know, I am obsessed with skeletal anthropology, particularly the Australopithecines, and branching off from them, the paranthropus species, which went extinct somewhere between one and two million years ago. I am also currently reading Phillip Roth's American Pastoral, an incredibly written book with many completely realized characters, and I thought that the title had a nice ring to it.
On a side note among side notes, (i guess a blog really is just a bunch of side notes) i stumbled across something called the Anthropic Principle, coined by Brandon Carter of Cambridge in 1973. From what I gather, the original theory suggests that because the many forces of our physical universe are "just right" to support to support life, then the universe must only exist if there is conscious life to observe it. Kind of like if a tree falls in the woods sort of thing...
In any case, I have to go, but here is a picture I drew of Devendra tonight because he is drunk with his own power and in an interview posted, he said that Ben Chasny of The Six Organs of Admittance was the real psychedelic folk musician. Then he went on to say that vetiver was the beams of sun, and Joanna was the Roots and Antony was something else,... "you know what I'm saying?" The interviewer probably nodded his head.
